EGLD is the native token of the Elrond blockchain, a relatively new protocol that leverages sharding to offer fast transaction speeds. It can execute 15,000 transactions per second with latency as low as six seconds. The EGLD token, also known as eGold, can be used to pay network fees, as a reward incentive and for Staking on the platform.

The EGLD price history began with the launch in 2020. It was available for purchase via a private sale where 19% of the debuted supply was sold out to the public, 7.5% was released for token generation, and another 15.41% was scheduled to be released every three months. The Elrond token launched on CoinMarketCap with an opening price of $12.40 and traded lower for most of Q4 2020. In Jan 2021, EGLD began to rise and has been on a significant uptrend since then, with the heaviest price correction happening right after it peaked in April 2021 at $239.
